Recently, the trending news in nigeria is “NIN”. I was very happy when I heard about linking NIN to our phone numbers, because I remember that some citizens of nigeria are naive to concerns NIN with our phone numbers. 


We all know that, not everyone have much time to watch, read or listen to news daily, that is why I decided to write on the NIN, NIMC trend.

What is NIN?

NIN is the abbreviation for National Identification Number. This is to identify each person number.

Nigeria government can also track you for different reasons/ purposes with your national identification.

What is NIMC?

NIMC is the abbreviation for National Identity Management Commission, and it is body operates and regulates issues of national identification in Nigeria.

The National Identity Management Commission is in charge of National Identify Verification, Registration, Issuance, Renewal and other duties related to the NIN.

So NCC has instructed all mobile operators (MTN, Airtel, Glo, Etisalat) in Nigeria to stop registering new SIM cards. And it facilitate the audit of the SIMs database.

The need to harmonise the disparate data in the country. As the present situation affects old and existing SIM card owners who might have genuine reasons to purchase and register a new SIM card, there is a need to harmonise the SIM database to avoid a recurrence of this situation in the future.

Nigerian federal government has announced the linking of NIN to all phone numbers by SIM card users, which should be Process for a period of time. This has commenced on 16th December 2020.

The deadline for link the NIN by SIM card users is 4th February 2020

1And start from that day, any SIM card users that don’t link his/her NIN, will lose he/her SIM card. Because they are going to deactivated and blocked it.

So make sure you submit your own National Identification Number for confirmation by following this article, before the deadline.

How To Get Your national identification number.

The NIN is an 11 digits number, which will be found on the slip that was issued to you during the NIN registration.

Alternatively, you can also get your NIN by dialling *346# on your SIM card to retrieve your NIN.

Once you dialed the code, you will be able to access your NIN and it works on all nigeria network provider ( MTN, Airtel, 9mobile or Glo) SIM cards.

How To Link Your NIN To Your Phone Numbers.

To link NIN to your phone numbers is very easy, all what you have to do now is to follow these instructions steps.

For MTN Subscribers: open your phone dial pad and dial *785#, and follow the instructions.

For Airtel Subscribers: Dial 1211# on your phone and follow the other instructions.

For Glo Subscribers: Text updatenin follow by your first name then your last name to 109. E.g UPDATENIN, NIN, First Name, Last Name.

For 9Mobile Subscribers: Dial 2008# on your phone and then follow the instructions. That’s all.
